On Wednesday, September 18th, our founders, Gail LeBoeuf and Barbara Washington, met with White House officials in a groundbreaking discussion to review the administration’s progress on implementing recommendations from a United Nations body aimed at addressing environmental racism in Cancer Alley.

In 2022, these community leaders traveled to Geneva to speak before the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination regarding the escalating public health crisis in their communities. Following their compelling testimony, the UN committee expressed concern about the situation in Louisiana’s “Cancer Alley” and issued several recommendations to the U.S. government. These included a call for a “moratorium on the authorization of new heavy industry facilities and the expansion of existing ones, such as petrochemical plants.” The Committee also urged the United States to “protect historic sites of cultural significance for these communities from harm caused by extractive and manufacturing industries.”
